A new report published today by The Cybersmile Foundation has revealed “terrifying” findings after a survey was carried out with the UK’s Gen Z, exploring social comparison culture on social media.

Cybersmile’s Comparison Culture 2023 report revealed how 14% of 16-24 year olds have had suicidal thoughts as a result of comparing themselves to others online. The data was even more stark when analysing how young people across the UK felt about their overall lives. A staggering 89% of those surveyed said that they felt unsatisfied with their life when comparing it to others online.

“The findings from our Comparison Culture 2023 report are terrifying,” said Cybersmile’s Co-founder, Dan Raisbeck. “The stark reality is that although the internet and social media offer many incredible benefits, our research shows that there are huge numbers of people being deeply affected by their time spent online.”

The report also showed how a majority of Britain’s young people felt when it came to how they perceived themselves and their overall wellbeing when looking at other social media users in comparison. 50% of those surveyed said that they had experienced low self-esteem as result of comparing themselves to others online.

The data was also stark when it came to how Gen Z view themselves. 34% of those surveyed said they had experienced “feeling like a failure” when comparing themselves to others online.

As social media continues to make a transformational impact on society, younger generations are spending an increasing amount of time online. Today’s new data shows the profound impact that social media use is having on overall mental wellbeing.
